The collection of signatures for the return of the capital of Kazakhstan to its former name - Astana has started.
“By the decree of the President of Kazakhstan, the capital of our country, the city of Astana, was renamed into Nur-Sultan in March 2019. This decision is negatively perceived in social networks and in the life of ordinary people, while the former name is used in everyday life. Considering the mood in society, we ask the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the government and the parliament of the country to rehabilitate the former name of the capital,” reads the petition, KazTag reports.
In addition, the authors of the petition asked the local authorities "in all cities to give the streets named after Nazarbayev neutral names that emphasize our statehood, unity and independence of the country."
“For example, Nazarbayev Avenue in Almaty can be renamed into Republic Avenue,” the petition says.
