With the initiative of the Prime Minister of Georgia, individuals charged for administrative or criminal offences during COVID restrictions will be pardoned, thus setting them free from penalty payments.

As noted by the Prime Minister of Georgia at a press-briefing held at the Government Administration, over 245 000 citizens and 344 legal entities will be eligible for the amnesty under the initiative. Namely, around 76 MM GEL will be pardoned from them for not wearing the facemasks and/or staying out of isolation or quarantine.

“I wish to let the population know that two draft laws were submitted to the Parliament of Georgia today in relation to charges brought against for violations of COVID regulations during the pandemic. They are getting released of administrative and criminal charges.

Within the scope of the referred initiative, amnesty will apply to almost 245 000 citizens and 344 legal entities, who were charged for administrative offences. We are talking roughly about 76 MM GEL to be levied for breaching the rules of isolation, quarantine or uniform wearing of facemasks” stated the Prime Minister of Georgia.

As noted by the Head of Government of Georgia, the decision has been taken on the grounds of the socio-economic conditions of the population caused by the pandemic.

“This decision has, of course, been taken on the grounds of the socio-economic conditions of the population caused by the pandemic. We understand it well that people and businesses suffered at large. 2020 turned out to be very difficult and these payments would have been an extra burden. Of course, we understand that compliance with regulations is essential when managing a virus, though it is vital to ease the economic conditions of our citizens. That is the core reason for this initiative. Hence, I once again wish to thank the Parliament. I did have a communication with our team - our political party council, our majority - and this initiative will be considered and endorsed in the coming days” stated the Prime Minister of Georgia.
