Transparency International Georgia issued a statement assessing the situation before the Central Election Commission (CEC) where after the police have used water cannons on protesters, thousands of them are still rallying and demanding the resignation of the CEC chair and scheduling the new elections.

“The police started to inform the people about the coming dismantling of the protest only after the fact of using water cannons without any prior warning had spurred negative assessment from the society” – Transparency International Georgia wrote on its official Facebook page.

According to the international watchdog, police had acted against the constitutional right of people to assemble and protest. “According to the law, the police can exercise proportional force against the protesters only in case of sheer necessity, and only with such an intensity that ensures reaching a legal goal” – TI Georgia wrote in a statement released on its Facebook page.

TI Georgia calls on both sides and especially on the government to act in the best interests of society.

“On the background that there appeared a real possibility to diminish this crisis through the negotiations and the opposition had shown their readiness to be involved in a dialogue, now it’s up to the government to act in the best interests of the society – TI Georgia stated – Protesters who have the legal right to manifest must be ensured this right for the peaceful protest. The government must act fully adhering to the law. It’s everyone’s responsibility to keep calm and not to weigh down even more on the crisis”.
