The Armenian government has no plans to open new Russian schools in Armenia, Education, Science, Culture and Sports Minister Vahram Dumanyan said during a government press briefing.

Earlier, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that Armenia showed interest in a Russian initiative to strengthen the position of the Russian language. He said as part of that initiative 5 Russian schools will be opened in Tajikistan, ARKA reports.

"I have never heard any senior Armenian or Russian official saying that the Armenian government is preparing to open new Russian schools in our country. I have not read such news either," Dumanyan said.

He added that the authorities are interested in the popularization of foreign languages. “We consider it important to popularize foreign languages, including the language of our strategic partner Russia. The more languages we know, the more we are flexible, informed and free,” he said.
