Armenia’s foreign trade upped 17.7 % in 2021 to over $8.3 billion

Armenia’s foreign trade in 2021 grew by 17.7% from the previous year to $8,379,234.2 billion, according to the National Statistical Committee (NSC).

Foreign trade volume in December 2021 was up $931.8 million (an increase of 23%) compared to December 2020 and up 3.7% compared to November 2021, the NSC said, ARKA reports. 

Foreign trade turnover with Commonwealth Independent Countries (CIS) countries amounted to about $2.9 billion, an increase of 20.4%. The largest foreign trade partners of Armenia in 2021 were Russia ($2.6 bln, up 20.9% from 2020), Ukraine ($168.9 mln, up 12.4%) and Belarus ($86.2 mln., up 7.8%).

Armenia's foreign trade with the EU countries in 2021 grew to about $1.6 billion (23.4% rise from 2020). The top five largest trade partners were Germany ($289.8mln, 2.5% decrease), Italy ($287.8mln, 24% increase), Netherlands ($228.6mln, 79.6% increase), Bulgaria ($227.6mln, 32.3% increase) and Belgium ($104.8mln, 44.1% increase)

Other major trade partners were China ($1.3 billion, up 30.7%), Iran ($502.8 million, up 25.2%), Switzerland ($385.3 million, 18.4% decline), the United States ($207.4 million, up 35.9%), Georgia ($190.3 million, up 45.9%), Iraq (over $182 million, up 9.6%) and the UAE ($11.6 million, up 3.4%).

According to the statistical data, exports from Armenia in 2021 rose by 19.1% to $3,022.4 billion compared to January-December 2020. In December 2021, exports were up $303.2 million from December 2020, (up 14.3%), and up 0.9% compared to November 2021.

Exports

Armenian exports to CIS countries in 2021 amounted to $936.2 million, an increase of 25.8%. The top three largest importers of Armenian goods were Russia ($847.2 million, up 24.5%), Belarus ($28.4 million, up 33.2%) and Ukraine ($25.7 million, down 2.9%).

Exports to the EU countries rose by 52.9% last year, amounting to $656.1 million. The top five importers of Armenian goods were Bulgaria ($198.4 million, up 31.6%), the Netherlands ($191.2 million, up 95.6%) and Germany ($77.6 million, up 37.4%).

Other importing countries were China ($393.2 million, up 35.7%), Switzerland ($359.6 million, up 20.8%), Iraq ($177.3 million, up 8.2%), the United States ($81.9 million, up 20.6%), the UAE ($74.4 million, down 22.4%), Georgia ($68.3 million, up 18.9%) and Iran ($65.5 million, down 22.5%).

According to statistical data, Armenian exports of mining industry products stood at $982.2 mln. (growth by 20.6% compared to January-December 2020), exports of finished food industry products grew by 10.83% to about $624 million, exports of non-precious metals surged by 59% to more than $364.4 million, exports of precious and semi-precious stones, precious metals dropped by 9.8% to $333.05 million, exports of textile products upped by 37.4% to $183.5 million, exports of plant products grew by 37% to $186.6 million, exports of animals and animal products rose by 36.8% to $107.1 million.

Imports

According to statistics, the volume of imports to Armenia in 2021 grew by 16.9% to $5,356.8 billion. In December 2021, imports were up by 27.7% from December 2020 to $628.6 million, and up 5.1% compared to November 2021.

Imports from the CIS in 2021 totaled $2.2 billion, an increase of 19.7%. The top three countries were Russia (about $2 billion, up 20.5%), Ukraine ($147.6 million, up 15.3%) and Belarus ($69.9 million, up 16.7%).

The volume of imports from the EU countries rose by 10.1% to $1.03 billion last year. The first five countries in terms of imports included Germany ($222.8 million, a decrease of 8.2%), Italy ($195.1 million, a 17.4% increase) and the Netherlands ($85.1 million, a 28.4% increase)

Imports from China amounted to ($551.5 million, up 26.1%), from Iran to $438.9 million, up 38.1%), from Georgia ($354.2 million, up 9.9%), from USA ($137.2 million, up 76%) and from the UAE ($121.04 million, up 26.9%).

Imports of mining industry products grew by 25.5% to $937.1 million, imports of machinery and equipment were up 2.3% to $898.2 million, imports of chemical industry products grew by 9% to $455 million, imports of finished food products rose by 9.2% to $434.3 million, imports of non-precious metals upped by 8.3% to $390.8 million, imports of land, air and water vehicles grew by 54.4% to $306.5 million and imports of textile products rose by 23 % to $301.5 million.
