65,105 people from third countries sought international protection in the 27-nation-bloc in May – 89 per cent more than in the corresponding time in 2021, when 33,385 asylum applications were recorded.

According to the European Office for Statistics, EuroStat, the number of asylum applications filed in May was up by 17 per cent compared to the previous month, when 54,145 applicants were recorded.

The 17-per cent surge noticed in applications for asylum in May can be linked to the increases in first-time applicants.

More specifically, 32 per cent more Venezuelan nationals applied for asylum in the EU, increasing the numbers from 3,655 to 4,820, while the surge in first-time applicants filed from Syrian nationals increased from 6,485 to 8,025, representing a 24 per cent surge and also representing the nationality group with the highest numbers.

Afghans and Venezuelans followed with 7,695 and 4,820 applications, while Columbians and Pakistanis filed 3,535 and 2,890 applications in May, respectively.

In May 2022, Syrians were the largest group of persons seeking asylum (8 025 first-time applicants). They were followed by Afghans (7 695), ahead of Venezuelans (4 820), Colombians (3 535) and Pakistanis (2 890).

“In March 2022, there was a large increase in Ukrainian first-time asylum applicants (from 2 370 in February to 12 885 in March) due to Russia’s military aggression against Ukraine. However, the numbers decreased to 1 510 and 1 295 respectively in April and May 2022,” Eurostat explains.

More subsequent applicants were recorded in May, with the numbers reaching 6,280 – up by 20 per cent compared to 2021 and 13 per cent more than in April of 2022.

The authorities in Germany received the highest number of first-time asylum applications, with 13,855 applications or 22 per cent of the total applications filed in May 2022. Other recipient countries to follow are Spain (10,200), France (9,800), Italy (6,450) and Austria (5,645).

Applications filed from Spain and France represented 16 per cent of the total applicants each, while those in Italy and Austria accounted for ten per cent and nine per cent of all applications filed for this month. These five Member States together made up 73 per cent of all first-time applicants in the EU.
