Austria leads in skis and snowboards

In the EU in 2020, around 3.7 million pairs of skis and individual snowboards were exported to other EU countries. In the same year, the EU exported 1.9 million pairs of skis and individual snowboards to non-EU countries, and imported 1.1 million of the same items from non-EU countries.

With regards to the production of pairs of skis and individual snowboards, the EU’s Member States produced 3.5 million items in 2020. Almost half of these items (1.6 million) were produced by Austria, Eurostat reports. 

Austria largest EU exporter; United States main non-EU recipient

Across the EU Member States, the largest exporters were Austria (2.1 million pairs of skis and individual snowboards exported in 2020), Bulgaria (564 700) and France (551 200).

When it came to exports to non-EU countries, over a third of EU pairs of skis and individual snowboards were sent to the United States (708 800, or 37% of total extra-EU exports of skis and snowboards). This was ahead of Switzerland (289 600, 15%) and Canada (277 900, 15%).

Furthermore, in 2020, the largest importers across the EU Member States were Austria (1.7 million pairs of skis and individual snowboards imported in 2020), France (825 100 items) and Germany (549 200 items).

When it came to imports from non-EU countries, almost half the pairs of skis and individual snowboards originated from Ukraine (529 800 items, or 48% of total extra-EU imports of skis and snowboards), followed by China (328 500, 30%).
