Tamar Zhvania, Chairperson of the Central Election Commission, has resigned. Zhvania posted a statement on the social network and explained that she will not continue exercising her authority from July 1.

"I would like to inform the public that I have made a decision not to continue performing the duties of the Chairperson of the Central Election Commission of Georgia from July 1, 2021, which will allow political parties to elect a CEC chairperson based on the updated Election Code.

Although by law I could continue to serve in the administration for more than two more years, I believe that the election regulations adopted under the Charles Michel Agreement have brought a new reality. Accordingly, the election of a new CEC chairperson under the new rule will be an additional, contributing factor to broad political consent.

I am confident that my decision will increase the possibility of constructive relations between the political forces, which in turn will be beneficial for the election administration, the upcoming election process and our country as a whole.

I had been the Chairperson of the Central Election Commission for almost eight years. During this time there were many challenges, difficulties, but even more success and development.

Under my leadership, the election administration organized 6 general and several by-elections. We deserved international recognition. Progress was made in terms of institutional development, inclusiveness, transparency and accountability. We introduced innovative services, various educational programs and received 7 international awards”, said Tamar Zhvania.

She thanked civil society and the media for their cooperation, as well as international organizations.

“I would like to thank the civil society and the media for their cooperation, which played a major role in the electoral process. Thanks also to all the agencies that actively cooperated with the election administration in promoting elections.

Special thanks to the international organizations, which play a great role and contribution to the support of the election administration and the electoral process, as well as to the strengthening and development of democracy’, said Tamar Zhvania and added that she did not plan to go into politics, but her plans were related to working in an international organization.
