"When other businesses are in trouble, the shipping business also has problems," Nino Menteshashvili, director of FedEx Georgia, told Business Morning.

As she pointed out, shipping companies have to deal with many problems amid the pandemic.

"When there are crisis and fluctuations on the market, the business feels bad, it has to adapt to special conditions. It was said, that COVID-related regulations were easy and beneficial for shipping companies, but this was not true. International shipping is tied to the exchange rate and its change has a huge impact on this segment. Shipping is also very strongly connected with other businesses," Nino Menteshashvili explained.

According to Menteshashvili, at the beginning of the pandemic there was a great demand for e-commerce, but the Georgian market was unprepared for supply.

"The companies were not ready in terms of logistics, and also found it difficult to meet the increased demand," Menteshashvili said.

According to Geostat, the revenue of shipping companies was GEL 95.9 million in 2020, which was GEL 5.7 million more than in 2019.

Statistics show that 75% of companies' revenues come from international postal courier services, with the rest accounted for the local courier services.
