Over 150,000 tourists visited de-facto Abkhazia during the first ten days of May 2021. Considering the information on booking and the large flow of vacationers during the May holidays, 2021 is believed to be a record year for tourism in the de facto republic.
"The tourist flow in Abkhazia during the May holidays increased 1.6 percent compared to the period in March-April 2021," says Ruslan Latipov, Deputy Chairman of the State Security Service's border detachment, in his interview with local media.
The flow of tourists to the de facto republic for the May holidays increased by 130 thousand compared to the indicators of 2019. During pre-Covid 2019, more than 20 thousand people arrived in the de facto republic during the same period.
Latipov noted that taking into account the statistics of border crossings, the tourist flow in the summer period in 2021 will remain at the level of 2019 when more than one million tourists crossed the border.
The tourist season in de facto Abkhazia in 2020 began on August 1. Russia and the de facto Abkhazian border were closed for four months in connection with the coronavirus pandemic. Over the period from August to October 2020, more than 600 thousand people visited de-facto Abkhazia.
