The government of Georgia introduced a vaccination lottery in order to encourage citizens to get vaccinated against Covid-19. The lottery started on September 13. As of today, 5 845 people have won GEL 916 000.
According to Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili, the lottery is effective.
"One million GEL is spent, which means that this one million is distributed among the population. It is really effective. I think this positively affected the vaccination”, - Irakli Gharibashvili said yesterday.
However, Amiran Gamkrelidze, head of the National Center for Disease Control is less satisfied with the effectiveness of the program.
"I think the lottery worked to some extent, but to tell you the truth, it did not give a great incentive to the vaccination," Gamkrelidze said.
The director of the NCDC refrained from voicing his position why money should be spent on the COVID-lottery, if it did not work. He notes that the Ministry of Finance will decide it.
