Three-year term for the consumer tariffs set by the GNERC in 2017 expires this year. It means that new electricity tariff must be determined by the end of the year.

The GNERC Chairman Davit Narmania insists that the new tariff, which will be set by the end of 2020, will enter into force for three years again.

However, Energy experts suppose that electricity tariff may increase from 2021 due to specific factors.

The GNERC Chairman also notes that several issues have an impact on the electricity tariff, including fluctuating GEL exchange rate and the pandemic.

Narmania refrains from making a preliminary assessment at this stage, but says that the calculation, which will be made by the end of December, will allow them to know what will happen to the electricity tariff.

“The mentioned documents are being revised now. Tariff is under the pressure due to several factors, including depreciation of exchange rate and the pandemic. There are also other factors that affect the tariff, some positively, while others - negatively. After reconciling all the parameters, we can say what the electricity tariff will be”, Narmania declares.

The new electricity tariff will be set by the Georgian National Energy and Water Regulatory Commission by the end of 2020 and will come into force on January 1, 2021.
