EU international trade in goods deficit €45.8 bn

The first estimate for euro area exports of goods to the rest of the world in September 2022 was €259.6 billion, an increase of 23.6% compared with September 2021 (€210.1 bn). Imports from the rest of the world stood at €294.0 bn, a rise of 44.5% compared with September 2021 (€203.4 bn). As a result, the euro area recorded a €34.4 bn deficit in trade in goods with the rest of the world in September 2022, compared with a surplus of €6.7 bn in September 2021. Intra-euro area trade rose to €247.6 bn in September 2022, up by 27.3% compared with September 2021 (€194.5 bn).

In January to September 2022, euro area exports of goods to the rest of the world rose to €2 120.3 bn (an increase of 19.2% compared with January-September 2021), and imports rose to €2 386.9 bn (an increase of 44.7% compared with January-September 2021). As a result the euro area recorded a deficit of €266.6 bn, compared with a surplus of €129.2 bn in January-September 2021. Intra-euro area trade rose to €2 021.2 bn in January-September 2022, up by 27.1% compared with January-September 2021, EuroStat reports.

European Union

The first estimate for extra-EU exports of goods in September 2022 was €232.0 billion, up by 24.0% compared with September 2021 (€187.1 bn). Imports from the rest of the world stood at €277.8 bn, up by 48.2% compared with September 2021 (€187.4 bn). As a result, the EU recorded a €45.8 bn deficit in trade in goods with the rest of the world in September 2022, compared with -€0.3 bn in September 2021. Intra-EU trade rose to €383.0 bn in September 2022, +26.1% compared with September 2021.

In January to September 2022, extra-EU exports of goods rose to €1 889.6 bn (an increase of 18.8% compared with January-September 2021), and imports rose to €2 247.6 bn (an increase of 49.7% compared with JanuarySeptember 2021). As a result, the EU recorded a deficit of €358.1 bn, compared with a surplus of €88.4 bn in January-September 2021. Intra-EU trade rose to €3 131.2 bn in January-September 2022, +25.0% compared with January-September 2021.

Annual comparison by Member State

In September 2022, compared with September 2021, all Member States registered large increases in extra-EU exports except Luxembourg (-3.8%). The highest increases were registered in Slovenia (+93.1%) and Croatia (+66.1%).

With regard to the extra-EU imports, all Member States registered large increases, except Estonia (-23.7%), Latvia (-15.3%) and Luxembourg (-0.2%). The highest increases were observed in Croatia (+101.7%), Bulgaria (+91.0%) and Lithuania (+83.7%).
