Even though the Coronavirus has brought many airlines to their knees, the Irish carrier Ryanair managed to continue its work successfully amid the ongoing pandemic, shows a recent report of Statista – a German company specializing in market and consumer data.

The travel restrictions and other bans imposed by governments worldwide in order to halt the spread of the Coronavirus and its new strains led to a reduced number of passengers travelling by air and a significant financial loss for airports and airlines, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.

“The COVID-19 pandemic impacted the aviation industry hard, erasing two decades of global passenger traffic growth in only a couple of months. Although financial support for the entire industry has been provided, airlines are on the brink of bankruptcy, while some have already ceased operations,” the statement published by Statista reads.

Despite the decrease, in 2020, the first year of the pandemic, Ryanair flew a total of 11.1 million passengers last month, marking a 75 per cent decrease of the number it carried during the same period in 2019, according to a BBC report.

Ryanair

According to Statista’s report Ryanair, with passenger traffic of just 51,7 million, in 2020 outperformed Germany’s Lufthansa Aviation Group by over 15 million passengers.

EasyJet

Switzerland’s EasyJet airline has been ranked in second place, with a total of 50.8 million passengers in 2020.

Lufthansa Group

Lufthansa Aviation Group was ranked in third place as its passenger traffic in 2020 was 36.4 million, marking a significant decrease compared to the pre-pandemic levels, as in 2019, Lufthsana’s passenger traffic was 145.1 million.

Air France-KLM

The fourth place belongs to the Franco-Dutch airline, Air France-KLM. The airline transported 34 million passengers in 2020, compared to 87.6 passengers carried in 2019.

IAG

Anglo-Spanish International Consolidated Airlines Group or IAG  was positioned in fifth place with 31.3 million passenger traffic recorded in 2020. Unlike last year, in 2019, when IAG’s passenger number was118.2 million.

Aeroflot Group

While Russia’s flagship carrier, Aeroflot group, carried 60.7 million passengers in 2019, the figures significantly decreased last year, with 30.2 million travellers transported.

Turkish Airlines

The national flag carrier of Turkey, Turkish Airlines, recorded 27.9 million passengers traffic in 2020, compared to 74.2 million in 2019.

Wizz Air

Hungarian airline Wizz Air was ranked in eighth place in Statista’s recent report, with passenger traffic of 16.9 million in 2020. The same carried 39.6 million passengers in 2019, before the Coronavirus outbreak.

Turkish Pegasus Airlines

Another Turkish carrier has been included in the list of Statista’s report with high passenger traffic registered last year. According to Statista, Turkish Pegasus Airlines carried 14.7 million passengers in 2020.

S7 Airlines

Russia’s S7 Airlines has been ranked in tenth place. The same carried out 12.3 million passengers in 2020.

Passenger Traffic in 2021

As per passenger traffic during 2021, previously, Director General of ACI EUROPE, Olivier Jankovec, emphasized that “for Europe’s airports, the first six months of 2021 were actually worse than last year, as passenger volumes further decreased by more than a third.”

Jankovec stressed that such a decrease is a direct result of the travel restrictions imposed by European Union Member States in order to halt the virus’ further spread.

Based on data revealed by Airports Council International Europe (ACI Europe), passenger traffic marked a 76.9 per cent decline across the European airports during the first half of this year, compared to pre-pandemic levels.
