The President of Georgia Salome Zourabichvilli considers that the arrest of the former President is a great challenge for any state. As she said at a briefing today, the arrest of the President is a challenge for the judiciary, the penitentiary system, the government, and the public as a whole.

According to her, everyone is equal before the law and Mikheil Saakashvili was well aware that the rule of law was being enforced, but despite this, he arrived in Georgia illegally.

"Everyone is equal before the law, but he [Saakashvili] is an ex-president in prison and cannot be an ordinary prisoner. He is a special prisoner. Our society, the international community is watching the situation. The face of the country is reflected in how we treat Saakashvili and how his dignity, health, and safety will be protected," said the President.

The president appeals to the authorities to protect the dignity of the ex-president despite his own behavior, as the former president has ties to the state and this status should be respected.

"Spreading the footage that has violated his dignity and honor, for me as the President of this country, is unacceptable. The public remembers well how the former president was treated in court or the penitentiary system. The current government can not look like its predecessor.

Ridicule is unacceptable both to me and to the public. In addition, I believe that the health condition of the former president should be given special attention, "- said Salome Zurabishvili.

The incumbent president says the government should be most concerned about the former president's health, and it probably is.

"The public should receive information about Mikheil Saakashvili's hunger and analysis on his condition daily. This is an obligation of the government. I call on the government to fulfill this duty fully and not partially, ”said Salome Zurabishvili.

She also responded to a request to transfer Mikheil Saakashvili to a civilian, multi-profile clinic. The president says that this issue is difficult, but the ex-president should be able to use the highest standards.

"Objective truths must be clarified in this direction as well. What standards should be used to treat a starving patient? We need to know the list of what is needed to treat a starving ex-president and find a safe solution from the government, which will respond to public outrage," - said Salome Zourabichvili.

In general, the President believes that the current situation requires a timely and thoughtful response.

Former President of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili has been on hunger strike for 47 days.
