The European Commision will present a report on the priorities in the enlargement package in 2023 to give the Georgian political system “sufficient time” to “thoroughly work” on the priorities for the European Union membership candidate status, Michael Rupp, a representative of the European Commission, said on Wednesday.

Speaking at a session of the European Parliament, Rupp said the Commission would draw up the report at the recommendation of the European Council.

The Georgian Public Broadcaster cited the Commission official as saying the body has been “glad” with the European Council's decision on granting the European perspective to Georgia.

Rupp also said the candidate status would be granted once “a number of priorities” are addressed by the country.

The Commission has been “very interested” to see Georgia work “hard, deep and thoroughly” on the outlined priorities for the membership status, he said.

The official also said that after a “careful deliberation” it had been decided “not to rush” the Georgian political forces in their attempts to depolarise the country’s political environment - a condition for the EU membership status - and to ensure “thorough work” on related reforms.
