GDP Share of Health and Medical Care in Sweden Was 10.9 Percent

The Health and medical care of Sweden comprised 10.9 percent of GDP in 2019. General government-financed 85 percent of the total costs, while households paid 14 percent of the total costs via patient fees and other fees. Total health expenditure in 2019 increased by 3.9 percent compared with the previous year.
 
Pursuant to Statistics Sweden, the share in 2019 was unchanged from the previous year. In 2017, the GDP share of health and medical care was 10.8 percent. Total current health expenditure increased by 3.9 percent compared with the previous year.

Health and medical care costs can be classified into seven main areas. Curative and rehabilitative care account for over half of all the costs. Health and medical care concerning care for the elderly and persons with disabilities account for one-fourth of the health and medical care sector. Nursing costs are also included in these costs. The third-largest item is the costs of pharmaceuticals for outpatients.
