Georgia did its best to demonstrate progress on the European integration path, to receive candidate status and open negotiations on EU accession, said Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili.

"Considering our history in general or the recent past, Georgia has done its best in order to make progress in terms of getting closer to the European Union, to get the status and not only, and also to open negotiations regarding the membership. So now the ball is in the court of the EU. Everything has been done by us. If we take and compare any candidate country and look at the issue from this point of view, of course, Georgia is not yet ready to be a member of the European Union, but we are only talking about candidacy. If we compare with other candidate countries, Georgia deserves to be at the same stage of rapprochement with the European Union as the candidate countries. So, now the ball is in the court of the European Union, and in fact, today the European Union must make a decision on how it sees its own future in this region, how it sees its own future in relation to Georgia," Papuashvili said.
