The wine self-sufficiency rate in Russia at the end of 2020 amounted to 44.5%. Consumption per capita amounted to 6.7 l/person, 9.5% down from the prior year.

The total volume of wine imports drops 13.9%. About 73% of imported wines on the Russian market came from four countries: Italy, France, Spain, and Georgia.

“In 2020, the volume of Russian wine imports amounted to 54.0 million dal, which is 13.9% less as compared with the previous year (62.8 million dal in 2019). In value terms, imports in 2020 also showed a decrease of 5.8% against the level of 2019 and amounted to US$ 1,089.8 million,” reads the recent analytical review of AgroExport, a division of Russia's agricultural ministry.

About 73% of imported wines on the Russian market came from four countries: Italy (31.0%), France (17.1%), Spain (14.0%), and Georgia (11.3%).

The import of base wine (in containers with a capacity of 227 liters or more) showed a significant decrease in 2020 (-78.2% to the level of 2019), which was a consequence of the signing and entry into force of the Federal Law of December 27, 2019 N 468- Federal Law "On viticulture and winemaking in the Russian Federation", according to which wine in Russia can be produced only from its own wine materials, that is, from grapes grown in Russia.

The wine self-sufficiency rate in Russia at the end of 2020 amounted to 44.5% (against 52.1% in 2015). Wine consumption per capita in 2020 amounted to 6.7 l/person, which is 9.5% lower than last year and 8.0% lower than in 2015.

Russian wine market for the period 2015–2020 showed multidirectional dynamics. In 2019, the volume of wine consumption in the Russian market grew by 9.9% compared to 2018 and amounted to about 108.1 million dal.

As of 2020, the volume of wine consumption in Russia showed a decrease and amounted to about 97.4 million dal (-9.9% to the level of 2019 and -8.0% to the level of 2015). The reduction in the Russian market in 2020 was largely caused by the introduction of restrictive measures during the COVID-19 pandemic, including the temporary closure of enterprises in the HoReCa segment.

In 2020, Russian enterprises produced about 44.2 million dal of wines, which is 4% lower than the results of the previous year.
