Deputy Minister of Health Tamar Gabunia declares, that the membership of GAVI Vaccine Alliance depends not on the desire of the countries, but on their economic development. Gabunia tried to explain to reporters why Georgia is not included in the list of GAVI at the briefing held in the Ministry of Health.

According to the Deputy Minister of Health, emerging countries use the platform of the Vaccine Alliance, while Georgia can buy the vaccine itself.

"We are no longer a member of GAVI, because Georgia has moved to a new stage with its economic status. Georgia is no longer considered a low-income country. Correspondingly, membership does not depend on our desire, it is determined by objective economic parameters. Countries that still belong to low-income countries are included in the priority group. Georgia is no longer a member of GAVI, as the country can finance vaccines itself. This is an achievement for the country.

However, Georgia is among the 18 countries that must receive Pfizer and AstraZeneca vaccines from COVAX in Q1," Tamar Gabunia said.
