Georgia spent $31.6 million on electricity imports in Q1

The cost of electricity imports in Georgia was up by 9.3% in Q1 of this year and the country spent 31.6 million USD on the purchase of electricity (28.9 million USD in January-March 2020).

According to Geostat, Georgia purchased electricity from three countries. Of this, the largest volume of electricity was imported from Azerbaijan in early 2021.

1.Azerbaijan – 321 million USD;
2.Russia – 6 million USD;
3.Turkey – 4.5 million USD.

As of the ESCO, the volume of imported electricity in Georgia was grown by 93% in Q1 2021 amounting to 1.43 billion KWH. To note, 41% of the electricity of imported in Georgia in the first 3 months of 2021. Imports growth are due to the Enguri HPP halt, as the HPP is under the rehabilitation process and is scheduled to open from May.

As for the electricity consumption, it was up by 3.3% amounting to 3.47 billion KWH. Telasi customers consumed 722 million KWH, while subscribers of Energo-Pro Georgia – 1.14 billion KWH. According to ESCO, occupied Abkhazia consumed 919 million KWH in Q1, 2021, which was 3 folds more compared to Tbilisi consumption with a population of 1.2 million.
