Georgian Railway Freight Turnover To Increase To 48 MLN Tons

Prime Minister of Georgia Irakli Garibashvili held a working meeting with Vice Prime Minister, Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development Levan Davitashvili, Deputy Minister Guram Guramishvili and Davit Peradze, General Director of JSC Georgian Railways.

Georgian Railway's profit hit a record high in 2022 amounting to GEL 283 million, the annual growth of its freight made a 22%-increase.

The future plans of railway development have been discussed at the meeting.

"Georgian Railway had progress in terms of modernization. Now, the Railway is capable of carrying 27 million tonnes of freight per year, while the figure would reach 48 million after the completion of its modernisation project by the end of 2024", it was noted at the meeting.

The officials also discussed the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway project, which facilitates the transport of passengers and goods between Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey, and noted the route was expected to become fully operational next year, with 87 percent of the project completed at this stage.
