Tourists from 25 third countries can travel restriction-free to Germany since July 4, the largest number of countries since March 2020, when Germany closed its borders for all non-essential travelers due to the pandemic.

Such a decision has been taken in line with the most recent recommendation of the EU Council, which on July 1 modified the list of epidemiologically safe third countries, towards which European Union Members states are encouraged to lift the restrictions gradually, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.

According to a press release issued by the German Federal Ministry of Interior, Building and Home Affairs, travelers from the following countries listed below will now eligible to enter Germany for tourism purposes:

Albania
Armenia
Australia
Azerbaijan
Bosnia and Herzegovina
Brunei
Canada
Hong Kong
Israel
Japan
Jordan
Kosovo
Lebanon
Macau
Moldova
Montenegro
New Zealand
North Macedonia
Qatar
Serbia
Singapore
South Korea
Taiwan
Thailand
United States

Consequently, this means that all persons wishing to travel to Germany from one of the countries mentioned above will be allowed to enter the German territory, regardless if they have been vaccinated against the COVID-19 disease or not.

“Anyone who is resident in one of these countries can enter the country without an important reason for travel and regardless of their vaccination status,” the Ministry emphasized.

At the same time, after being highly criticized by EU officials, travel and tourism sector organizations and officials of the concerned countries, the German government has decided to ease the restrictions for several countries falling under the virus variant areas list.

The Robert Koch Institute, an institute that is responsible for disease control and prevention within Germany, has removed the following five countries from the list of virus variant areas and has categorized them as high incidence areas: India, Nepal, The Russian Federation, Portugal, The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

Previously, travel from Portugal and Russia was banned due to the increasing rates of the COVID Delta variant.

However, the new decision, which became effective on July 7, indicates that travelers from the above-mentioned countries who are allowed to enter Germany can shorten their self-isolation period if they obtain a negative COVID-19 test result after the fifth day of isolation.

Simultaneously, the ones who have been immunized can skip the self-isolation requirement if they prove that they have been fully vaccinated with one of the COVID-19 jabs approved by the European Medicines Agency (EMA), which are Pfizer, AstraZeneca, Moderna, and Janssen.
