The Government of Georgia plans to build a new thermal power plant, - according to the report submitted by the government to the parliament. As of the document, the work on feasibility studies for the Gardabani 3 and Gardabani 4 thermal power plant projects has already been completed.

The installed capacity of these two thermal power plants should be 500 MWh.

"Work is underway on the construction of new thermal power plants (Gardabani 3 and Gardabani 4) with an installed capacity of about 500 MW. At this stage, work on feasibility studies has been completed,” the document reads.

The project is implemented by the Georgian State Oil and Gas Corporation (GOGC). In Gardabani, two state-owned thermal power plants - "Gardabani 1" and "Gardabani 2" have been operating for several years. The 230-megawatt Gardabani 1 plant was commissioned by the Turkish company ÇALIK ENERJİ for USD 220 million, while the Gardabani 2 plant was built by the Chinese firm China Tianchen Engineering Corporation for USD 180 million. The construction of new thermal power plants will take place right next to the existing generation facilities.

The tender for the construction of the Gardabani 3 thermal power plant with installed capacity of 272-megawatt was announced in 2020, and in November 2020, the State Procurement Agency was informed that it had been won by the Turkish company ÇALIK ENERJİ, which would build the project for USD 174.8 million. However, in 2021 the company said that the bid of ÇALIK ENERJİ was rejected.

It is still unknown when the details of the tenders for Gardabani 4 and Gardabani 3 thermal power plants will be announced.
