The Greek government has launched winter tourism, following a successful year in the travel and tourism industry, as the revenues generated in this industry brought the country over €10 billion, about four billion more than expected.

The news was shared in an interview for France 24 by the Minister of Tourism, Vassilis Kikilias, who also noted that tourism is the locomotive of the Greek economy as 25 per cent comes from this industry, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.

“We expected five to six billion euros in revenues from tourism, and we have exceeded ten billion. The year is not over yet, yes, we have tourists in Athens, Crete, Rhodes, and we are ready to campaign for the first time for winter tourism in Greece,” Minister of Tourism, Vassilis Kikilias said.

Minister Kikilia recalled that it was Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis’ idea to establish the European vaccination certificates, also known as the EU Digital COVID-19 Certificate.

“[The document] created new conditions of safety and confidence for travellers across Europe, with visible results for Greece even in November,” he said, while expressing optimism for 2022 as the number of bookings and the agreements are already finished.

Regarding vaccination, the Minister of Tourism stressed that it remains the most important weapon for safety amid the pandemic and that the more people get vaccinated, the closer social and economic life is to normality or the pre-pandemic levels.

According to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) data, about 65.1 per cent of the population in Greece is partially vaccinated in addition to 61.9 per cent that has been fully immunized to the virus, lagging by 4.3 per cent compared to the average of full vaccination cumulative uptake of the total population across the 27-nation-bloc population.

However, the total vaccine doses administered per 100 inhabitants is 129.2, about 29.4 more than the global average. In addition, there are 61.47 fully vaccinated persons per 100 inhabitants, compared to the global rates set at 41.32.

“We have created in Greece from the first moment a standard vaccination program with respect to the citizens, and we have recently seen a significant increase in vaccinations and appointments for the first dose,” Kikilias concluded.

However, the successful year in tourism cannot be precisely predicted for the winter season in Greece, as the European countries are ordering national lockdowns, tightening entry rules, and advising citizens to refrain from any travelling due to a new variant of the COVID-19 virus, Omicron, emerging in the international stage.

Furthermore, the World Health Organisation (WHO) data shows that Greece has reported 44,348 positive cases in the last seven days, in addition to 640 deaths related to the disease.
