In 2021, fish production increased to 2,861.1 tons, while the figure was 789.6 tons less amounting to 2,071.5 tons in 2020, - show the preliminary data from the National Statistics Office of Georgia (Geostat).
According to the document, production increased in the following types of fish: carp, sturgeon and catfish. The annual production of these species amounted to 1 414 tons. The production also increased in the salmon species and last year its volume was 1446.7 tons.
By the regions, Kakheti is the leader in fish production, where fish production exceeded 1000 tons last year, followed by Shida Kartli with 851.6 tons, and Guria is in third place with 300.7 tons. According to Geostat, in 2021, the area of ponds intended for aquaculture was 2,946.2 ha, and the volume of ponds was 30.3 ha. Compared to 2020, the volume of both ponds has increased.
In 2021, compared to 2020, the export of fish decreased. If in 2020 the export of fresh fish and frozen fish from Georgia has exceeded USD 6 million in total, in 2021 this figure will exceed USD 2.5 million.
