How Much Money Does The NBG Spend To Print Currency Notes?

There are GEL 4.6 billion currency notes and coins in circulation in Georgia. The total number of these banknotes exceeds 100 million. The annual report of the National Bank shows that the NBG annually spends money on printing banknotes and replacing old currency notes with new ones.

According to the financial report of the National Bank, the following amounts were spent on printing money over the years:

2021 - GEL 25,128,000;
2020 - GEL 16,848,000;
2019 - GEL 0;
2018 - GEL 10,931,000;
2017 - GEL 6,213,000;
2016 – GEL 3,782,000;
2015 - GEL 11,134,000.

As for the number of banknotes,the following banknotes were in circulation in the countryby the end of 2021:

● 1 lari - 4.6 million coins;
● 2 lari - 2.3 million coins;
● 5 lari - 22.9 million banknotes;
● 10 lari - 7.8 million banknotes;
● 20 lari - 19 million banknotes;
● 50 lari - 14.8 million banknotes;
● 100 lari - 29.3 million banknotes;
● 200 lari - 0.9 million banknotes.

As for the coins less than GEL 1, the NBG does not have exact statistics. However, the total value of 5-, 10-, 20- and 50-tetri coins amounts to GEL 151.7 million.
