Davit Narmania, Chairman of the Energy and Water Supply Regulatory Commission of Georgia explains, that increase in electricity imports from Russia is explained by the low price of electricity in the country.

“We get electricity from Russia, as well as from Azerbaijan and Turkey. Auctions are announced every month, where decisions are made based on the carrying capacity of power lines and electricity price. Electricity imports from Russia is temporary because we make its import for various countries from time to time. In Russia’s case, the main point is low electricity price," - said Davit Narmania.

As for the reasons for electricity imports increase, the Chairman of the GNERC notes that this fact poses risks both in terms of electricity capacity and in terms of economics.

“The point is that the carrying capacity of our power lines is limited. Correspondingly, if we increase electricity imposts, we will have to build new ones. So radical approach, that we do not need HPPs is not advisable from both economic and security points of view. We are losing much and will lose even more in the future, especially since the dependence on many countries, including Russia is growing, which occupies 20% of our country," Narmania said.

Georgia spent USD 37 million 113 thousand on electricity imports in 9M2021, which was USD 650 less compared to the same period of the last year. The largest share of imports - 61% accounted for Russia, Georgia imported 1 billion 049.4 million kWh electricity worth USD 7 million.
