From November 2020 to February 2021, 3.49 million nights spent were registered in Austrian accommodation establishments, 50.32 million fewer than in the same period of the previous year (-93.5%), as preliminary results of Statistics Austria show. The number of arrivals fell by 95.1% to 0.7 million.

"The 2020/21 tourist winter season has so far been almost completely cancelled due to the Corona pandemic. In the first four months of the season, the number of nights spent fell by 93.5% compared to the same period last year. The remaining 3.49 million nights were mainly spent in the course of a medical treatment and by business travelers," says Statistics Austria Director General Tobias Thomas.

In February 2021, Austrian accommodation establishments recorded 0.91 million nights spent, which corresponds to a decrease of 19.24 million or 95.5%. Nights spent by nonresident guests fell by 98.4% to 0.26 million, and nights spent by resident guests by 82.9% to 0.65 million.

The fact that nights spent still took place despite the extensive closures of accommodation establishments is due to exceptions, such as nights spent in the course of a medical treatment. Furthermore, overnight stays for business reasons, but also nights spent by athletes, contributed to the fact that nights spent were registered in February 2021.

The number of nights spent in the current calendar year 2021 (January and February) decreased by 95.3% to 1.67 million (residents: 82.1% to 1.20 million; nonresidents: 98.4% to 0.47 million); arrivals in the same period decreased by 96.1% to 0.34 million (residents: 88.9% to 0.24 million; nonresidents: 98.5% to 0.1 million).
