Mariam Jashi Leaves Parliamentary Majority and Position of Chairperson of the Committee

Mariam Jashi, the Chair of the Education, Science and Culture Committee took the decision to leave the majority.

“Almost three hours have passed since the vote. I deliberately used this time to avoid an emotional decision. In addition, many of my colleagues and friends remain in the Dream and I used the time to talk to them and inform them of my decision. I am leaving the Georgian Dream majority and accordingly, I am leaving the post of the Chairperson of the Committee on Education, Science and Culture”, - Jashi has decalred.
Along with Jashi, Tamar Chugoshvili, Vice-Speaker of the Parliament and other members of the parliamentary majority – Dimitri Tskitishvili, Irina Pruidze, Tamar Khulordava, Sopho Katsarava, Zaza Khutsishvili and Giorgi Mosidze, have left the ruling team.

To remind, The Parliament has rejected the bill on constitutional amendments relating to the proportional electoral system in the first reading. 101 MPs, including opposition lawmakers, supported the bill on the transaition to the proportional electoral system. Three MPs voted against the bill, though the required quorum was 113 votes, thus the MPs failed to approve the bill in the first reading.

To remind, the bill, drafted by 93 lawmakers, proposes changes to the constitution, according to which, 2020 parliamentary elections will be conducted under proportional electoral system, with a zero barrier.
