Telegram was the most popular messaging app in Armenia in 2021, having pushed back Viber, which had been the most popular messenger for many years, information security expert Samvel Martirosyan said, citing a research conducted by SimilarWeb.

The authors of the research analyzed Android data from 90 countries using Similarweb’s market research intelligence, to determine the most popular messaging apps across the world, finding that overall, there were three top messaging apps dominating the global market in 2021, ARKA reports.

Of the 90 countries examined, WhatsApp was the world leader, snagging the top-messaging app spot in 53 countries, 27% of the world and 59% of this dataset. These countries include Argentina, Austria, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Kenya, the Netherlands, Portugal, Russia, South Africa, Spain, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and more.

Telegram has shown impressive growth in the last six months, coming in second overall and knocking Facebook Messenger from its previously held position. Last May, the app was ranked third, snagging the most popular app title in 11 countries. As of November 2021, Telegram had the highest popularity in 14 countries including Armenia, Belgium, Cambodia, Latvia, and Venezuela.

Facebook Messenger was the only other messaging app to win four or more countries, showing strong popularity in 13 countries including the United States, Australia, Canada, Denmark, Hungary, New Zealand, Philippines, Poland, Sweden, and Thailand.

Viber has a strong presence in Europe, winning against Bulgaria, Greece, and Ukraine. Line is maintaining popularity in Asia, with the highest performance in Japan and Taiwan.

Apps that only claim one country include Color Message (Slovenia), KakaoTalk (South Korea), Zalo (Vietnam), WeChat (China), and Plus Messenger (Uzbekistan).
