Microsoft Teams has boldly beaten Zoom with a free all-day video calling feature that can be used by anyone - Forbes reports.

Microsoft’s Teams has been striving to beat Zoom for many months as users take to video conferencing services to stay in contact. Now, Teams may have managed to leapfrog Zoom by bringing its Teams for consumers offering—formerly only available on mobile—to the desktop and web.

Using the new Teams friends and family desktop features, you can now create a meeting for up to 300 people, and see up to 49 in the gallery view via Together Mode. And the best bit is, you can run it all day completely for free, Microsoft announced in a blog.

In addition, you don’t need to set up a Teams account if you use the web browser option.

It’s a clear bid for the consumer market, particularly those in the U.S. unable to meet in person during Thanksgiving this year due to Covid-19 restrictions. Microsoft’s biggest competitor Zoom is hugely functional, but it has a 40 minute meeting limit, which it’s also lifting for Thanksgiving.

But the Zoom limit runs out after Thanksgiving, while Teams’ doesn’t have an end date, which could entice some users to finally switch to Microsoft’s service.

So next week, it looks like the video conferencing battle will ramp up. Sure, Zoom offers lots of cool features, and is improving its security, but Teams is also adding new functions to make your virtual meet ups more like the real thing.

Using Microsoft’s Teams, you can take advantage of features such as custom backgrounds, AI-based noise suppression and Together Mode to enhance your video call experience.

As Thanksgiving and Christmas approach, many people are considering how they can meet up with friends and family while staying safe. There are certainly lots of options, but with Teams offering this free service you can use all day, it could be worth giving it a try.
