In the spring, the government introduced the Stop Covid app, which allows users to mark their Covid status. Through it, people can find out if they have had contact with an infected person. Disclosure of relevant information in the system is voluntary. However, it is unknown how many users of the application have been infected with COVID-19 and how many of them have established their own covid status through this system.
Today, when Georgia ranks first in the world in terms of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants, it is especially important for the population to receive the information that this system can potentially provide.
BMG has requested information from the Ministry of Health on how many people have downloaded this system on their smartphones. According to the ministry, the app was downloaded by 232,659 users (Android 146,372; iOS 90,967).
Creating an electronic system cost the government 412 thousand GEL. As Deputy Health Minister Tamar Gabunia told the BMG, in early September, the system would have benefited much more if it had been downloaded by many more people who would have indicated their covid status.
Nonetheless, it is noteworthy that the government was mainly busy with popularizing the app in the spring.
