European Commission-sponsored global fundraising campaign launched on May 4. Since then, € 9.5 billion has already been raised for the development of a coronavirus vaccine, said EC Chairman Ursula von der Leyen.

As part of a global campaign to raise funds for the development of vaccines and drugs for the new SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, 9.5 billion euros have already been raised, said Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission (EC). “A remarkable result, we have reached the first major milestone of the Global Responsese marathon, led by the European Commission,” she wrote on her microblog on Twitter on Tuesday, May 26th.

Von der Layen organized an international online donor conference on May 4. The USA refused to participate in this event. At the first stage, 7.4 billion euros were collected, then private individuals, foundations and governments continued to make donations.

The goal of this initiative is to coordinate globally research with the goal of developing vaccines and drugs for coronavirus. Once such drugs are created, they will be available to all countries, including the poorest.
