National mourning for victims of protests declared in Kazakhstan

The President of Kazakhstan Kasim-Jomart Tokayev announced in the country January 10, 2022 a nationwide mourning for those killed as a result of mass protests.

Speaker of the country's leader Berik Uali announced this on Facebook, local media reports. 

He noted that the decree will be published on the president's website.

“Due to the numerous human casualties as a result of tragic events in a number of regions of the country, the President of Kazakhstan, Kasim-Zhomart Tokayev, decided to announce January 10, 2022 a day of national mourning,“ he wrote.

For several days in a row in Kazakhstan there have been protests over gas prices. In some cities, the police brutally detained protesters. It is currently unknown exactly how many people were injured and died as a result of the riots.

Kazakh President Kasim-Zhomart Tokayev said that he had ordered the security forces to open fire without warning.
