Number of tourists 94.5% down in January

Number of visitors was 94.5% down in Georgia in January 2021. According to Georgian National Tourism Administration(GNTA), 34,909 foreign citizens visited Georgia last month, the reduction amounts to 598,000.

The major number of tourists (85%) visited the country by land after the closure of air borders. At the same time, 30,905 or 91% of the visitors were men, while the number of women was 2,860 or 8.5%.

Top 15 countries from which Georgia received the most visitors in January:

1 Turkey - 14,500 visitors, decrease of 80.7% y-o-y
2 Georgia (non-resident) - 5,732 visitors, decrease of 88.7% y-o-y
3 Armenia - 3,875 visitors, decrease of 95.8% y-o-y
4 Azerbaijan - 3 138 visitors, decrease of 97.5% y-o-y
5 Russia - 1,916 visitors, decrease of 97.8% y-o-y
6 Uzbekistan - 1,291 visitors, decrease of 13.7% y-o-y
7 Ukraine - 626 visitors, decrease of 95.1% y-o-y
8 Kazakhstan - 385 visitors, decrease of 91.6% y-o-y
9 Belarus - 310 visitors, decrease of 87.6% y-o-y
10 Tajikistan - 255 visitors, decrease of 47.3% y-o-y
11 France - 226 visitors, decrease of 85.1% y-o-y
12 Germany - 205 visitors, decrease of 92.7% y-o-y
13 Bulgaria - 146 visitors, decrease of 71.1% y-o-y
14 US - 121 visitors, decrease of 95.0% y-o-y
15 Kyrgyzstan - 118 visitors, decrease of 80.2% y-o-y

Air traffic resumed in Georgia from February 1, 2021, but a significant increase in visitors’ number is not expected in the country yet.

Georgia received a total of 1.7 million visitors in 2020, the decline amounts to 81% y-o-y. A major number of visitors came in the country in Q1 before the “lockdown”. As of the NBG, the losses from the tourism sector have made up 2.7 billion USD in 2020.
