“Population should be informed properly about the HPPs”

Maia Bitadze, head of the Parliamentary Committee on Environment and Natural Resources, says that if the local population is properly informed about the large HPP projects at the beginning of the process, it will be much easier to reach a consensus between the parties and avoid misunderstandings.

Bitadze says that the sponsors of large hydropower plants in Georgia are often international financial institutions, which in fact have a stricter environmental policy than Georgia.

"Then what causes misunderstanding? It is caused by miscommunication, when you know something as a gossip," said Maia Bitadze.

According to her, Georgia also has a new Code of Environmental Impact Assessment, which repeats the EU legislation. The updated document has been in force for 2 years. However, Bitadze says that it is a fact that there are some shortcomings here as well and "some issues need to be corrected."

"If the local population is involved in the processes from the very beginning, there is always a resource to make a healthy and correct decision.

However, sometimes companies also sin. For example, when they demand the use of river water in a certain percentage and get more, due to which the fishing channels are damaged”, said Bitadze, noting that it is necessary to properly inform the population.
