The National Bank of Georgia (NBG) works on the creation of “digital GEL”. According to Papuna Lezhava, Vice President of the National Bank of Georgia, the NBG met about 100 technology companies regarding the “digital GEL”.

"Work on digital GEL continues, we have finished negotiations with our potential partners. In fact, we have met over 100 technology companies who want to participate in the introduction of digital GEL. Internal work is underway to establish a specific format and we will start working on a pilot project later this year," said Papuna Lezhava, President of the National Bank of Georgia.

According to the NBG, the ideas submitted by these companies are currently being analyzed.

"The analysis process includes clarifying specific characteristics of the digital GEL, scaling it up and launching the digital currency in pilot/test mode, which will reveal the roadmap for the next stages of the digital GEL project," said the NBG’s President Koba Gvenetadze in response to the question of MP Badri Japaridze.
