Georgian population spends 47.7% of their revenue on food, - according to the report published by the National Statistics Office of Georgia (Geostat).

As of the report, the share of food in the consumer expenditures of the households in Georgia was 43% in 2019, but its share grew up to 47.4% in 2020 due to the crisis and lockdown.

Food occupied the smallest share in consumer expenditures in 2017 and amounted to 41.4%.

Such a high share of food among the total consumer expenditures indicates the low income of the population.

Food share is smaller in the total expenditures of high-income countries. For example, according to the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), food expenditures account for only 8.6% of total consumer expenditures.

In rich countries, food expenditures are distributed as follows:

US - 8.6%
Singapore - 7%
United Kingdom - 8%
Switzerland - 9%
Canada - 9%
Australia - 10%
Austria - 10%
France - 13%.
