“Thank you for giving me the optimism on this very particular day” – such was the closing sentence of Sebastian Molineus, the World Bank Regional Director for the South Caucasus while addressing GITA participants on the awarding ceremony of 100 thousand GEL grants for startups, which is sponsored by the World Bank.

Sebastian Molineus started out his speech by admitting that he was thinking whether or not he should have come to GITA and to the award ceremony today. As Molineus explained himself, there were several reasons for such thinking.

“As we know, we are coming out from a pretty important pandemic. We’ve had a conflict in this region between Armenia and Azerbaijan that has had quite a big impact on the people in this particular region and it could have spillover impacts on Georgia for that matter, economically, at least. And third of all – Molineus said - we know current political tensions that exist in this country”.

He added that nonetheless, he could not think of a better place to be “than here today with all of you in this room”.

World Bank Regional Director for the South Caucasus said it gives him tremendous pleasure and energy to see entrepreneurs, startups who cling to their ideas and create of develop something new and truly groundbreaking. “That is something tremendous” – Molineus said at the award ceremony.
According to the WB, this is the sixth competition. It started out back in 2019 and since then had supported 84 startups with 106 different products and services, leveraging over 2 million USD in private sector financing.
