The number of foreigners visiting Turkey is expected to double in 2021 compared to last year. The country expects to host 34 million foreign visitors. Turkey was one of the first countries to launch the Safe Tourism Certification Program in the world and also special travel insurance packages covering Covid-19 related expenses.

During 2020 income from tourism in Turkey decreased by 65.1% and declined to US$ 12 059 320 000 compared to the previous year. While individual expenditures constituted US$ 9 998 320 000 of the total tourism income, US$ 2 060 999 000 of tourism income was obtained by package tour expenditures, reads an official statement of Turkstat.

In 2021 Turkey expects to host 34 million foreign visitors, Deputy Culture and Tourism Minister Nadir Alpaslan told Anadolu Agency.

In the wake of the novel coronavirus pandemic, Turkey introduced its Safe Tourism Certification program, which, according to Alpaslan, gave it an edge over southern European countries.

Turkey's tourism sector had a remarkable year in 2019, welcoming 52 million tourists and earning around $35 billion, he said.

Though it expected revenues of $40 billion last year, the tourism sector was one of the most affected sectors by the pandemic, Alpaslan stressed.

He also noted that the pandemic's effects continue in 2021, though all the necessary measures were taken in Turkey to ensure foreign visitors' safety.

Turkey was one of the first countries in the world that launched a Safe Tourism Certification program. Under the program, tourist facilities get authorization after complying with a wide range of requirements that protect the health and safety of tourists and staff.

The country also introduced the special travel insurance package exclusively designed for tourists visiting Turkey to cover COVID-19 related expenses. The travel insurance policies can be purchased from contracted airlines, various sales points/kiosks inside the airport and online channels.
