Turkey's Unemployment Rises to 13.9% in April

Turkey's unemployment rate reached 13.9% in April, up 0.9 percentage points from the previous month. Employment in industry sector decreased by 212 000 persons and in services decreased by 52 000 persons.
 
A seasonally adjusted measure of labor underutilization rose to 27.4% from 25.7% a month earlier, according to data released by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat).
 
The number of employed persons decreased by 193, 000 to 28 056 000 persons in the period of April 2021 compared to the previous month. The employment rate occurred as 44.2% with 0.4 percentage point decrease.
 
The number of persons in the labor force realized as 32 567 000 persons with 83 000 persons increase in April 2021 compared to the previous month. Labor force participation rate was 51.3% with 0.1 percentage point increase.
 
The youth unemployment rate in the 15-24 age group was 25.6% with 0.1 percentage point increase compared to the previous month and the employment rate was 32.0% with 0.5 percentage point increase. The labor force participation rate in this age group realized as 43.0% with 0.8 percentage points increase compared to the previous month.
 
In April 2021, the number of agricultural employment increased by 62 000 persons, construction increased by 9 000 persons while industry decreased by 212 000 persons and services decreased by 52 000 persons. According to the distribution of employment by sector, 18.0% was employed in agriculture, 21.3% was employed in industry, 6.4% was employed in construction and 54.2% was employed in services.
 
During the report month, the rate of unregistered employment, which indicates the share of employment who are not affiliated with social security institution in total employment realized as 28.4% with 0.8 percentage point decrease compared to the same month of the previous year. The rate of unregistered employment in the non-agricultural sector realized as 16.4% with 0.7 percentage point decrease compared to the same month of the previous year.
