UN: More than 5.5 million refugees have fled Ukraine

More than 5.5 million refugees have already fled their homes in Ukraine and have gone abroad due to the Russian invasion.

Such data are provided by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Ukrinform reports.

As of May 1, 5,563,959 people left the territory of Ukraine.

Most people – more than 3 million – left for Poland. More than 825,000 people went to Romania, more than 681,000 – to Russia, 530,000 – to Hungary, more than 447,000 – to Moldova, 379,000 – to Slovakia, and more than 25,000 – to Belarus.

At the same time, 1,357,500 Ukrainians have returned home since February 28.

According to the latest estimate of the United Nations International Organization for Migration, another 7.7 million Ukrainian citizens are considered internally displaced persons.

On February 24, the Russian Federation launched a new phase of the eight-year war against Ukraine – a full-scale invasion. Russian invaders shell and bomb peaceful cities, towns, and villages in Ukraine, torturing and killing civilians.
