Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoev has cut the staff of the government and state entities by 24 percent. According to a presidential decree signed on January 25, the number of deputies of ministers and heads of numerous state bodies will be cut to 144 people, which will allow 703 vehicles and 10 buildings to be used for other needs. The move will also save almost $138 million for the state budget, the decree says.

"On the basis of a presidential decree signed on January 25, a total of 17,447 units of managerial and production personnel will be reduced in the ministries and departments of Uzbekistan.

This is 24% of the total number of employees who receive salaries from budgetary and non-budgetary funds in ministries and departments.

According to the decree, the number of deputy heads of ministries and departments is reduced from 207 to 144, or by 30 percent. 703 cars and 10 buildings are released.

The commentary to the resolution says that 1.5 trillion soums ($133.4 million) will be saved in the budget by reducing the number of employees, and 70 billion soums ($6 million) by reducing vehicles.

The total number of employees of ministries and departments is set at 56,573 people," RFE/RL's Uzbek Service reports.
