Davit Narmania, Chairman of Georgian National Energy and Water Supply Regulatory Commission urges environmental activists, who are against the construction of hydropower plants, to participate in the discussions.

“I suggest environmental activists, independent experts and any interested person to hold a debate about the construction of hydropower plants. Some people mislead the public.

I will now clarify a few points:

False, that grown energy consumption will not follow the economic increase;

False, that electricity import is better than developing local production;

There is many other false information on which I offer an open discussion to the interested parties”, Narmnaia explains.

According to him, the so-called “decoupling” is not expected in Georgia for the near future. “Decoupling” refers to an economy that would be able to grow without a corresponding increase in electricity consumption.

Moreover, Narmania notes, that the advantage of local hydropower plants is that they ensure sustainable energy supply, create new jobs and value-added tax in the country's economy, which has a positive impact on macroeconomic and fiscal parameters. Development of local hydropower plants is good for keeping electricity tariff stabile.
