"We are approaching the European Union step by step, according to the agenda," Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili told BM.GE.

The head of the Georgian government has declared at the World Economic Forum in Davos, that Georgia has fulfilled 45% of its obligations under the Association Agreement with the European Union.

“It was part of Georgian Dream’s 2020 election campaign to apply to the EU in 2024. We intended that 70% of commitments made in the Association Agreement would be fulfilled by 2024.

The Association Agreement generally covers the period up to 2027. This is shown by all the objective assessments that in terms of implementation of the Association Agreement, Georgia is a leader not only among the Association Trio, but also among the Balkan countries, and in some respects even ahead of some EU members, for example in the fight against corruption.

Georgia, with its history deserves only one response from the European Union. This is a positive response to our application," Papuashvili said.

The Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on European Integration also has positive expectations for Georgia to receive the status of the EU candidate.

"Georgia is a European country, with its content and it deserves to have the prospect of joining the European Union, and this perspective is to grant the status of a candidate country. For our independence and freedom, we think that this is the path that Georgia must take. We expect that the progress made by Georgia will be positively assessed and Georgia will receive the status of a deserved candidate country," Maka Bochorishvili told BMG.
