The 7th meeting of the International Advisory Committee under the Hepatitis C Elimination Program was held.

As Deputy Minister of Health Tamar Gabunia told reporters at the meeting, a study on the elimination of hepatitis C in 2021 showed a significant, 67% reduction in the spread of the disease.

Tamar Gabunia hopes that Georgia will finally have the status of a country free from hepatitis C.

The Hepatitis C Elimination Program was first conducted in Georgia in 2015. In 2021, a repeat study showed a 67% reduction in the spread of hepatitis C. This is a direct indication that the tasks planned under the program were effective.

At this stage, the program treats more than 77,000 people. The cure rate reaches 58%. The program has created an opportunity of survival for tens of thousands of people and an unprecedented example of hepatitis C elimination, both in Georgia and around the world. Today's meeting serves to discuss the remaining challenges in order to finally approach the goal of future elimination - how to declare Georgia a country free of hepatitis C," - said Tamar Gabunia.
