The policy towards hydropower plants should be that our country and population need it, - this is how we should approach it,- Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Gharibashvili told the Public Broadcaster.

In the interview, the head of the government did not want to talk in detail about the current relationship between Namakhvani and the project investor. He noted that ENKA was leaving the project and his statement might be used against the country. Speaking of the Namakhvani HPP project, Garibashvili hinted at a lack of communication with society over it.

“In general, our policy towards hydropower plants should focus on the needs of the country and the population. If the project brings great benefits to the economy of our country, our population and the region, we must do it. Moreover, I openly state that, I would not avoid from state investments. State must finance large strategic facilities like Enguri. Can anyone imagine today, what conditions we would be in if Enguri did not exist in our reality”, the PM said.
