The Story of Google

The seeds of Google were sown in 1995 at Stanford University, where Larry Page and Sergey Brin envisioned a search engine that wouldn't just index information, but prioritize its relevance. This revolutionary idea, born in their dorm room, challenged the norm of ranking websites by mere view count.

In 1997, the Google domain was registered, and by 1998, the company was officially formed. Its unique algorithm, focusing on relevance, quickly gained traction, making Google synonymous with online search. By 2001, Google's popularity had skyrocketed, leading to the recruitment of Eric Schmidt as CEO, who steered the company until 2017.

In 2003, Google's meteoric rise continued with the acquisition of a large office, later purchased outright for $319 million. It was during this period that "Google" truly entered the lexicon, becoming a verb meaning "to search the internet."

2004 marked another milestone with the company's IPO, raising $1.7 billion and solidifying its market position. This paved the way for further expansion, with acquisitions like YouTube ($1.65 billion in 2006), DoubleClick ($3.1 billion in 2007), and the launch of the Android operating system in 2008.

Google's influence continued to grow, exemplified by the release of Google Maps in 2013. Recognizing its evolving scope, Google underwent a major restructuring in 2015, forming Alphabet Inc. as the parent company for Google and its various ventures.
