Georgian Public Defender Levan Ioseliani urged the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) to implement targeted measures against those who violate the law while simultaneously allowing peaceful citizens to express their protests and enabling journalists to perform their professional duties.
In a statement commemorating Human Rights Day, observed on December 10, Ioseliani addressed the current situation in Georgia and the challenges being faced.
The Public Defender reported having met with individuals detained during the protests on Rustaveli Avenue. He noted that 225 detainees reported experiencing ill-treatment, with 157 exhibiting visible physical injuries.
“I met these individuals personally, and society has seen the evidence of their suffering. We call on the Special Investigation Service to promptly and effectively investigate all cases. Those responsible for these crimes must be held accountable. It is unacceptable for these incidents to go unaddressed, as this failure may lead to further law violations and exacerbate the situation during future protests,” Ioseliani stated.
Ioseliani also emphasized the “critical role” of journalists, commending them for their efforts as human rights defenders. He insisted that the government must ensure a safe working environment for media professionals, allowing them to cover events without pressure and in a manner they deem appropriate. He stressed the importance of thoroughly investigating all cases of assaults against media representatives.
Additionally, the Public Defender brought attention to the emergence of informal groups at recent protest rallies.
“There is widespread condemnation of this situation; it is alarming when unidentified, masked individuals attack civilians and journalists. Such acts must be thoroughly investigated, and the perpetrators brought to justice,” he concluded.
